Vivax Medical Corporation of Torrington, Connecticut, USA has been awarded US Patent # 6,772,458 for inventions incorporated in its SomaSafe Enclosure product line.

The SomaSafe Enclosure products form an advanced canopy bed used for restraint and management of patients with cognitive impairment or behavioral issues that relate to their safety or the safety of caregivers. Traditional behavioral management or patient restraint methods include two or four point tie downs, vests, medications, bed alarms, low beds and sitters. For many patients that need restraint, clinical studies have shown that the SomaSafe Enclosure offers many advantages.  These include lower cost, faster patient recovery, shortened hospital length of stay, improved patient safety, greater caregiver safety and better overall patient well being. SomaSafe Enclosures are used in medical centers, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, long term care facilities, assisted living and in home care.

Patent 6,772,458, "Collapsible Restraining Enclosure for a Bed", was issued on August 10, 2004 to Thomas D. Ellen and John J. Gildea. It is assigned to Vivax Medical Corporation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE VIVAX MEDICAL CORPORATION REACHES AGREEMENT WITH THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION

Vivax Medical Corporation, a developer, manufacturer and distributor of durable medical equipment and medical devices centered around its patented Vivax Mobility System^tm and the Soma Safe Enclosure^tm announces the signing of an agreement to provide its products to the Veterans Administration for use in their hospitals, long term care facilities and home care. This agreement marks a significant milestone in the commercialization and market penetration of these products.

The Vivax Mobility System^tm automatically, comfortably and safely transfers a disabled or obese person from a prone position on it’s hospital bed to a seated position in it’s companion wheel chair or to a standing position for therapeutic and ambulatory benefits and the mobility needs of the disabled or obese person.  In addition, the wheel chair is equipped with a built in commode to greatly ease and simplify the disabled persons toileting needs.  The functionality of the Vivax Mobility System^tm replaces a suite of more traditional equipment including an electric hospital bed, a wheel chair, a portable commode, an electric lift and in most cases an air therapy mattress and their bariatric counterparts for the obese veteran.

By eliminating onerous lifting requirements, Vivax Medical envisions the Mobility System improving care in Veterans Administration hospitals and giving new freedom to chronically disabled veterans by providing them a home remedy, empowering them to leave nursing home care and return to their homes.  In hospitals, the Vivax Mobility System^tm enables increased productivity by reducing the number of persons needed to transfer a disabled person with a mobility handicap.  The risk of worker compensation injury to employees and personal injury to veterans from lifting through use of the system to transfer between bed and wheel chair is eliminated. Of major significance is the ease with which the system addresses the complications of immobility such as bed sores, decubitus ulcers, infections, heart problems, muscle weakness and bone loss by ambulating and repositioning the patient to a variety of positions between lying and sitting on a frequent basis.

The Soma Safe Enclosure^tm is a bed canopy that encloses a bed for use with existing hospital or medical beds. The Soma Safe Enclosure^tm Bed is a canopy bed that forms an enclosed bed. Both are used for patient safety and therapeutic benefits.  The Soma Safe Enclosure^tm product line is intended to provide a superior alternative to conventional restraints, continuous patient monitoring or sedative medication for the neurologically impaired and involuntarily aggressive patient.
